The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has delivered the completion of a flood control structure along Andoon River that aims to protect residents in the city of San Carlos, Negros Occidental during heavy rains.

DPWH Region 6 Director Nerie D. Bueno in her report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan explained that the project is built downstream of Andoon River along Bacolod North Road to complement the already completed structure at the other bank.

Implemented by DPWH Negros Occidental Sub-District Engineering Office in the amount of P50 million, scope of works on the flood control project involves the construction of a 212-lineal meter stone masonry wall structure with provision of coco nets and sodding to control river bank erosion.

“The new flood control structure now enables a faster and easier excavation of river deposits caused by erosion from the mountain ranges of San Carlos City, widening and deepening the river from 20 to 40 meters to hold more amounts of run-off water, thereby preventing overflow,” said Director Bueno.

Other than protecting the lives and properties of communities in the area, the structure will also ensure continuous agricultural and economic activities in the area as it prevents farmlands and ponds from being damaged by flood water.
