Road Slope Protection Safeguards Motorists in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo

Monday, July 11, 2022

A road slope protection structure built by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) now prevents road blocks along a section of Iloilo East Coast Capiz Road in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo.

Implemented by DPWH Iloilo 3rd District Engineering Office in the landslide-prone Barangay Santiago, the project consists of active slope works using high tensile wire with 19.29 lineal-meter grouted riprap and line canal on the mountain side.

When it rains, the soil erodes and covers the road, rendering one (1) out of four (4) lanes unpassable. With the completion of this P49.2 million project, motorists are now safe from landslides and the road section is now accessible to all types of vehicles even during heavy rains.

During the onslaught of Typhoon Agaton early this year, several road sections were affected by landslide but the road section with the slope protection was passable.

Meanwhile, two (2) more road slope protection projects are being undertaken in the municipality of Barotac Viejo under the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA) and additional projects were identified and proposed for inclusion in GAA 2023 due to damages by Typhoon Agaton.
