The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently constructed a multi-purpose building that doubles as an evacuation center for the residents of Miagao, Iloilo in times of calamities and emergency situations.
According to Secretary Roger G. Mercado, the completion of the P39.5-million structure, which stands a few kilometers away from Miagao’s town proper in Barangay Kirayan Tacas, was made possible through the efforts of DPWH Regional Office 6.
Residents of the 119 barangays of Miagao town now have a state-of-the-art multi-purpose building furnished with a kitchen, mess hall, reception area, male and female toilets and bath with shower stall, administrative office, storage rooms, breastfeeding and conjugal room, clinic/prayer room, play area, stage area, and a parking area.
With its many facilities and own generator set to provide back-up electricity for easy access, the center is more than fit to cater to evacuees from Miagao as well as neighboring towns in case of disasters.
Secretary Mercado added that the now turned-over structure to the Miagao Local Government Unit (LGU) is also the first of its kind in the area with installed cistern tank and rainwater collector system.
“In light of the recent onslaught of Typhoon Odette in various regions in Visayas and Mindanao, the delivery of this structure that greatly benefits Southern Iloilo could not come in a better timing. DPWH is proud to have built this permanent evacuation center and multi-purpose covered court that is resilient, sensitive and compliant to standards,” Secretary Mercado said.
