
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is presently implementing the widening of 10 vital bridges in Southern Leyte that serve as significant link of travelers coming from Luzon to Mindanao.
According to a report from DPWH Regional Office 8, a total amount of P252.6-million was allocated for bridge widening projects in Libagon and Sogod towns which are being fast-tracked to complement the ongoing road expansion along Southern Leyte’s major highways.
The bridges are being widened from two (2) lanes to four (4) lanes to accommodate a larger number of motorists, provide a safer travel to both locals and tourists, and ease out traffic congestion along the province’s major thoroughfares.
Seven (7) bridges are undergoing expansion in the town of Libagon namely: Bitanhuan Bridge with budget amounting to P47.64-million, Oticon Bridge amounting to P37.3-million, Nahulid Bridge with P26.3-million, Iti Bridge with P23.4-million, Pangi Bridge worth P18.75 million, and Gakat and Nahaong Bridges worth P17.3-million each.
Widening projects are also being done in the bridges of Magapso costing P25.6-million, Maac II costing P22.5-million, and Buac costing P16.5-million, all located in the town of Sogod.
Alternate routes are provided by the DPWH as well as traffic advisories and warning signs to inform the public of the ongoing bridge widening projects that are expected to be completed within the year 2018.
