The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the rehabilitation and improvement of the flood control structure that would save lives and properties of residents in the low-lying barangay of Bantian in Calbayog, Province of Samar.
DPWH-Samar First District Engineer Alvin A. Ignacio said that with a total budget allotment of P10-million from the 2018 General Appropriations Act (GAA), DPWH constructed a 96-meter embankment to complement with existing structure along Bantian Creek.
“During heavy rainfall, the overflowing of water from the creek submerges Barangay Bantian in flood, including the elevated houses and barangay hall,” said District Engineer Ignacio.
The rehabilitation and improvement of the flood control project has a widened catchment, making it capable to contain a higher volume of water.
“With the realization of this project, residents can now peacefully stay in their homes knowing that the creek will no longer overflow even during high tide, heavy rains, and typhoon season,” Ignacio added.
