The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will take advantage of the low volume of vehicles in Metro Manila during this Holy Week to undertake road improvement works.
Secretary Mark A. Villar said that although light vehicular traffic is anticipated since most of the people are either staying in their homes or are on vacation in the provinces during this Lenten week, motorists and the general public are still advised to expect slowdown/build-up in some sections of major thoroughfares.
Road improvement and maintenance works beginning at 1:00 a.m. on Holy Thursday, April 13, 2017 and will be completed at 5:00 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 will cover Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), Commonwealth Avenue, Quirino Highway, Congressional Avenue Extension, C5, Pasig Boulevard, McArthur Highway, and Bonifacio Drive.
Sections of EDSA southbound direction affected by road works are the following: second lane between Roosevelt Avenue to Quezon Avenue in Quezon City; third lane in front of Citynet 1, first lane in front of Transcom, first lane in front of Lux Center, and near corner Shaw Service Road all in Mandaluyong City; and from Tripa de Galina fronting Kabayan Hotel in Pasay City (drainage project). The third lane of EDSA Shrine Area at the northbound direction of EDSA Mandaluyong City will also be repaired while EDSA-Ortigas Flyover/Interchange will undergo rehabilitation but will not be closed to traffic.
The fourth lane of Commonwealth Avenue northbound between Litex Road to Doña Carmen; second lane of Quirino Highway between Mindanao Avenue to Arceli Street; and third lane of Congressional Avenue Extension between Luzon Street to Tandang Sora Avenue all in Quezon City will also undergo road reblocking.
Motorists travelling southbound direction of C-5 Road are likewise advised of road works between J. Vargas Avenue to Pasig Boulevard in Pasig City and at Makati/Pasig Boulevard to Commando Link in Makati City. Rehabilitation and major repair works will also be done at C.P. Garcia Bridge along C-5 Road and Vargas Bridge along Pasig Boulevard, Pasig City.
Road reblocking at MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela City will cover first lane between Cayetano Street to China Bank.
Using one (1) day concrete mix, affected road lanes are expected to re-open at 5PM of Easter Sunday in time for influx of travellers from the provinces, said Villar
On the otherhand, road closure on the northbound direction of Bonifacio Drive corner P. Burgos Street in Port Area, Manila will be implemented April 12 to April 17 for the installation of reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) designed to minimize flooding around the vicinity of Manila City Hall.
As the Catholic faithful observe the Holy Week, Villar also reminded those who will go to the provinces to have their vehicles checked before their trip and to not hesitate to make stops at DPWH “Lakbay Alalay” stations deployed along major thoroughfares nationwide for emergency motorists assistance.
The DPWH-National Capital Region Director Melvin B. Navarro said that prior clearance and coordination has been secured with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and other concerned stakeholder for these various projects in Metro Manila this Lenten Week.
