An improvement project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) along the shorelines of Candon-Santiago-San Esteban-Sta. Maria Coastal Road in Candon, Ilocos Sur provides a place for physical wellness activities for residents as well as health and fitness enthusiasts.

Based on a report submitted by DPWH Region 1 Director Ronnel M. Tan, DPWH Secretary Roger G. Mercado said that the completed project covers a 2.26-kilometer coastal road or a bay walk and a 700 lineal meter access road at Barangay Darapidap which will promote better access and easier transportation to Santiago Cove in Santiago, Ilocos Sur.

Aside from the bay walk, which is a brick coastal road, DPWH also constructed a bicycle lane with drainage which can now be used for outdoor activities such as biking, jogging, and brisk walking.

The southern part of the bay walk is also being developed as a coastal park, aimed at providing a place where children and families can spend time reconnecting with nature.

“This project is motivated by the need for a safe and spacious area where locals can safely participate in recreational activities while coping with the economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic,” said Secretary Mercado.
