The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to complete this October a flood control structure that will protect the villages near Imbang River in Silay City, Negros Occidental.

District Engineer Jaime SJ Javellana of DPWH Negros Occidental First District Engineering Office said P83.9 million river walls are being constructed on both sides of the 1.2-kilometer portion of Imbang River to mitigate river overflow and flooding during rainy season.

“We are closely monitoring progress of work activities as we fast-track the construction of this flood control structure which is targeted to be completed by October this year, given favorable weather condition,” Javellana said.

According to Javellana, the project will mitigate flooding of at least four (4) barangays in Silay City that are located near both banks of Imbang River.

“Flooding and erosion of river banks are perennial problems of the residents living beside Imbang River. They have long complained of sleepless nights whenever heavy rains occur,” he added

With the completion of Imbang River flood control structures, Javellana said that residents won’t have to deal with the devastation caused by spilling water from the river banks.

He added that the river walls will also protect the embankment and approaches of Imbang Bridge which is among the vital bridges along Bacolod North Road in Silay City.
