The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has deployed a new multi-purpose amphibious dredger (MPAD) to declog Rio Grande de Mindanao from the rapid proliferation of water hyacinths that impede the flow of water causing flooding in Cotabato City and nearby areas.

Secretary Mark A. Villar cited from a report that DPWH Region 12 led by Regional Director Basir M. Ibrahim is now clearing the obstruction that damaged the river walls and bridges along the waterway.

“We have initially deployed the new equipment at the Delta Bridge in Cotabato City. This MPAD will be able to prevent further damage to our infrastructure and prevent flooding in the area,” said Regional Director Ibrahim.

According to Director Ibrahim, water hyacinth is considered the most damaging aquatic plant capable to reproduce at extraordinary rate thereby choking lakes and rivers.

“Once cleared along Rio Grande de Mindanao, thousands of constituents in the low-lying areas of Cotabato City and nearby areas will be protected from the overflow of river and will be able to sleep in peace even during rainy season,” added Regional Director Ibrahim.
