The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will soon complete the widening of (2) vital bridges along Daang Maharlika Surigao – Agusan Section, namely Bangonay Bridge in Jabonga, Agusan del Norte and Magtiaco Bridge in Alegria, Surigao Del Norte.
In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region 13 Director Pol M. Delos Santos said that widening from two (2) lanes to four (4) lanes through the construction of parallel bridges will ensure more volume of vehicles to accommodate this section of Daang Maharlika.
Remaining works on the parallel bridges involve the construction of approaches that are targeted to be completed within the year.
It can be recalled that during the 2018 Typhoon Basyang, Bangonay Bridge and Magtiaco Bridge were damaged and rendered impassable due to the scouring of the slope protection approaches, resulting to the hampered relief operations and economic activity.
Both bridges were strengthened to withstand strong currents of water and falling debris during extreme weather conditions.
The additional lanes from the newly-constructed parallel bridges will also alleviate traffic strain on the old bridges, preventing further deterioration of structures.
The widening projects also cover the provision of solar lights for the safety of motorists, bikers, and pedestrians traveling at night.
