Residents of Barangay Pagnamitan, Guiuan, Eastern Samar are now protected from storm surge and flashfloods with the 252-meter flood control structure completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Based on a report submitted by Region 8 Director Allan S. Borromeo, Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan said that the construction of a seawall is deemed a priority to ensure that residents in the area will no longer experience the destruction caused by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, considered among strongest typhoons to hit the Philippines.
With a total project cost of P29.64 million, the project involved the construction of a 252-meter seawall that safeguards around 237 families, government buildings, and nature reserves or protected areas.
“This project has allowed residents to sleep peacefully at night, especially in the occurrence of heavy rains, knowing that the seawall will serve as a barrier from big waves that can take away lives and destroy properties such as houses, buildings, and other local facilities situated in the barangay,” said Secretary Bonoan.
DPWH is also set to implement the Phase 1 of the Pagnamitan Bridge this year, to provide better accessibility along Guiuan-Sulangan Peninsula Road and widen the waterways to lessen flooding in the area.
