The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of three (3) new flood control structures aimed to ensure safety of residents in Barangays Lonoy and Cag-olango in Calbayog City, Samar.
In his report to Secretary Mark A. Villar, DPWH Region 8 Director Nerie Bueno said that the flood control structures are built to protect lives and properties close to Jibatang River and Cag-olango Creek from flooding during excessive rains.
The 373-meter protective structure was completed along the downstream section of Jibatang River in Barangay Lonoy which intends to protect residents of low-lying barangays of Lonoy, Capacuhan, Caybago, Mag-ubay, and Jose Roño.
Director Bueno also reported that in Barangay Cag-olango, a 109.11-meter flood control structure was built along both sides of Cag-olango Creek, preventing the overflowing of the body of water that streams directly into the Samar Sea.
Funded under the 2020 General Appropriations Act (GAA), both structures in Lonoy and Cag-olango involved the construction of a walkway for the residents, steel sheet pile foundation, and embankment built in the amount of P45.01-million and P9.44 million, respectively.
“The dedication of DPWH workers on ground is crucial for the timely completion of these projects in preventing damages caused by flooding nationwide, especially during typhoon season,” noted Secretary Villar.
