DPWH-6 Hosts PICE Regional Elimination Quiz

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office 6 recently hosted the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) Regional Elimination Quiz for the 35th National Civil Engineering Student Quiz (NCESQ).

Civil Engineering students from nine (9) schools in Panay Island competed namely University of Antique, St. Anthony’s College, Capiz State University, Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion, Garcia College of Technology, Western Institute of Technology, Central Philippine University, University of San Agustin and University of Iloilo

DPWH OIC – Assistant Regional Director and PICE Iloilo Chapter President Jose Al V. Fruto welcomed the participants and their coaches as well as the officers and members of PICE. He also expressed appreciation to OIC – Regional Director Wenceslao M. Leaño Jr. for the generosity in accommodating the request of PICE for DPWH to host the event.

PICE Regional Coordinator Engr. Antonio F. Belarga also thanked DPWH for hosting the event. “This morning, I wish you students and coaches all the luck. This activity will give our energetic Civil Engineering students additional experience.” He added during his message.

Engr. Julius B. Abela, Chief of Construction Division in Capiz 1st District Engineering Office and Chief of the Panel of Examinees along with Engr. Doris Mae L. Peñaredondo and Engr. Rona Mae B. Barberona reviewed the quiz guidelines and a ceremonial opening of examination envelope followed. The quiz covers the following areas: 1) Mathematics, Environmental, Energy and Transportation, 2) Design and Construction and 3) Hydraulics and Geotechnical.

Kim Hilbert Antatico of Capiz State University emerged as the 1st place winner with a cash prize of P7,000 plus trophy and medal followed at 2nd place by John Lorenz Tuala of Central Philippine University with a cash prize of P5,000 with trophy and medal, and Chives Mio Maghari of St. Anthony’s College at 3rd with a cash prize of P3,000 with trophy and medal. Other participants were given consolation prize of P500 each.

The quiz is an exercise in doing analyses and critical thinking- skills that are needed on Civil Engineering subjects with the hope of winning the upcoming National competition and to prepare the students for the Civil Engineering board examination.
