The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 has lined up several strategic infrastructure programs to decongest major thoroughfares and implement integrated seamless transport system in Western Visayas by providing new road openings connecting several provinces including island linkages by year 2020
According to OIC Assistant Regional Director Jose Al V. Fruto, among the projects set to be implemented includes the widening of Aklan East Road and Aklan West Road that will improve accessibility to Boracay island from anywhere in Panay Island.
Fruto also mentioned the on-going Kalibo Circumferential Road, which is also expected to decongest the traffic in the busy town.
Similarly, the Roxas City Circumferential Road will lessen traffic congestion at the busy streets of Roxas City and will also provide easy access to Culasi Port. Travelling to Capiz from Iloilo City will also be more accessible with a 4-lane wide thoroughfare.
In addition, funds have been proposed for a road connecting Lambunao town of Iloilo and Valderrama in Antique, which is a major road opening that will connect the two provinces and will be called Panay East-West Road (East-West Lateral) when finished.
Likewise, one of the visions of Secretarty Mark Villar is the implementation of Panay-Guimaras Bridge that will further boost tourism at Guimaras Island. Motorized boats have long transported people and goods along Iloilo Strait, the body of water that separates Iloilo and Guimaras.
