The Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) use of solar cell powered lighting device at selected U-turn slots and pedestrian crossing has made Pavia Section of Iloilo Diversion Road in Iloilo City safer for motorists and pedestrian.

In his report to Secretary Mark A. Villar, DPWH Region 6 OIC- Director Wenceslao M. Leaño said that the installed solar road studs not only made travelling along Iloilo Diversion Road more visible at night but also during rain and fog conditions.

Installation of solar road studs is part of the activities under the P416.277 Million project for the rehabilitation of 20.99 kilometers Iloilo Diversion Road, which stretches from General Luna in Iloilo City to Iloilo International Airport in the town of Cabatuan.

Leaño said this rehabilitation project will reduce traffic congestion in the area and will provide additional access to the Iloilo International Airport, as well as to Iloilo Business Park, which serves as the economic and tourism center in the Metro Iloilo.

“The improvement of this road allows the commuters and motorists to save time and resources in the delivery of goods and services, increasing productivity and profit, hence, boosting the socio-economic and tourism development,” Leaño added.

The installation of solar studs along U-turn slots and pedestrian crossing, particularly in Pavia, Iloilo section is part of continuing effort of DPWH to improve Iloilo Diversion Road network.

DPWH Region 6 Construction Division Chief Ormel G. Santos said these solar studs give the motorists advance signals of the U-turn slots and pedestrian crossing.

The installed solar studs at U-turn slots and pedestrian crossing along Iloilo Diversion Road are first in Western Visayas Region, added Santos.
