Secretary's Corner

HON.  HERMOGENES EDEJER EBDANE, JR.

Message:

DPWH 111th Anniversary

22 June 2009

Magandang umaga sa ating lahat.

One hundred eleven years of service is what we celebrate today.

One hundred eleven years of building the roads and bridges that have linked and connected our country.

One hundred eleven years of being the frontliners for growth and development, for where we break ground, follows progress and prosperity.

The preponderance of number ones in 111 emphasizes that we must always be number one in performance and service, as has been done since 1898.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the very mission of our Department requires that we literally take the lead in paving the way forward, and by that same token, being number one in delivery and efficiency becomes the minimum requirement.

The rich history of public works through more than a century and a decade provides us with the inspiration and the motivation to do even better in the years ahead.

The experience of the past gives us many lessons on hurdling challenges and setting the pace for innovation.

And the fruits of labors past, of 111 years of service, are now being enjoyed in the here and now by our communities and citizens.

With all these in our portfolio of learnings and accomplishments, we stand as one of the stalwarts of development for the future.

Ang ating pananagutan sa sambayanan ay ang pagpapatatag sa kalsada na tulay sa kinabukasan.

The roads we build are the bridges to the future.

The physical structures provide the real-time means toward progress, while the opportunities that come with these highways and byways provide the hope and the inspiration to achieve and to grow.

Bawa’t kalsada ay nagbibigay ng bagong pag-asa, sa bawa’t kalsada tayo ay pinagkakaisa

With the linkages that comes with our roads and bridges, comes hope and unity, as we allow greater possibilities for commerce, education and interaction.

All necessary for every Filipino to reach his full potential, to have the options for a better life.

In every forum and conference I have joined in the last few months, this message of our shared responsibility has been my repeated refrain.

KALSADA ANG TULAY SA KINABUKUSAN, SAMA-SAMA NATING ALAGAAN.

It is time that we spread the word once more, that our work is shared with our citizens, that building the country’s roads and bridges is only the beginning.

We must encourage greater awareness of the importance of keeping our public works in good working condition.

We must help our countrymen realize that this is the best way to maximize taxpayers’ investments and enable the building of more new roads and bridges in more communities across our islands.

And I believe that me must begin doing this at home, here in the DPWH.

Let every member of the DPWH family take the lead in preserving the roads and bridges that we use every day. It is our job as public servants, and our responsibility as citizens.

Perhaps because these have become such a part of our daily life, we forget that like everything else on this earth, they too need to be preserved and used properly if we are to get the most mileage from them, so to speak.

Because we must take responsibility for our work as public servants.

This has been the hallmark of the DPWH through the years, and this we must continue, in honor of those who came before us.

Let me close by congratulating all our men and women for a job well done and expressing my gratitude for your dedication and your commitment. But I will ask for more as we face the deadlines of 2010.

There is much  work that must be completed  in the months ahead.  The heat is on, so to speak,  but I know we all work very well under pressure.

As I have said before, let us continue to WORK AS ONE, for TOGETHER, WE ALWAYS DO THINGS BETTER.
