DPWH UNDERTAKES METRO ROAD REPAIRS THIS LENTEN WEEK

  The Department of Public Works and Highways will continue to take advantage of the relatively low volume of vehicles this Maundy Thursday (March 28, 2013) to Easter Sunday (March 31, 2013) with implementation of various re-blocking works on damaged pavement along national roads in Metro Manila. Secretary Rogelio L. Singson said repair of national road including portions of EDSA, the most heavily travelled highway in the National Capital Region, will follow the standard practice of lane-by-lane repair starting tomorrow, Holy Wednesday (March 27, 2013) at 10 P.M. and with the concrete poured and cured, the road sections shall be opened to traffic before 5:00 A.M. of Monday, April 1, 2013. EDSA re-blocking activities in Caloocan City will cover northbound lane from Asuncion Street to MCU Hospital (lane 6) and southbound lane from Benin Street to Urbano Plata Street with the DPWH Third Metro Manila District Engineering Office supervising the contracted works of L.R. Tiqui Builders and Jagon Builders Construction Corporation, respectively. In Quezon City, the Quezon City First Engineering District Office will closely manage the repair works at the 5th lane of EDSA northbound from Congressional Avenue to Access Road under Rend Enterprises and General Construction and 5th lane of EDSA southbound from Cloverleaf to Oliveros Street under contract with Dimaguila Constrcuction and Supply. DPWH First Metro Manila District Engineering Office will ensure quality completion of the repair works at EDSA Mandaluyong City specifically at northbound lane from Highway 54 to end of underpass under I.M. Construction Corporation and southbound lane under B. Bernardo Construction. DPWH Second Metro Manila Engineering District Office will team up with AUKH Construction in working for the repair of EDSA Makati City northbound lane from 7 Eleven near Estrella Footbridge to Guadalupe Bridge while the southbound segment from Guadalupe Bridge to San Carlos Seminary will be undertaken by Vivid Construction. Repair works to be done at the EDSA Pasay City area particularly near pedestrian overpass at Dela Cruz Extension fronting BLTB and Victory Liner under contract with AKH Construction will be supervised by South Manila Engineering District Office. Other road network in Metro Manila scheduled for replacement of damaged concrete pavement in order to strengthen further road stability and carrying capacity includes the Nicanor Reyes Street in Sampaloc, Manila from C.M. Recto to España; San Marcelino Steet, Manila from Remedios to President Quirino; North Avenue (westbound) infront of SM North EDSA and centerlane of crossing Mindanao and North Avenue, Quezon City; 1st lane of southbound portion of Mindanao Avenue, Quezon City from Road 8 to Road 1; and northbound of Fairview Avenue, Quezon City from Mindanao Extension to Milano Drive (4th lane). Singson explained that road repairs are necessary to improve riding surface, reduce travel time and vehicle operating cost, to address vehicle gas emission, and prolong the life of the road. Singson said that the DPWH National Capital Region will monitor all the scheduled repair activities and he advises motorists, as necessary, to use alternate routes for traffic diversion.

BIDDING OF NAGTAHAN REPAIR WORKS SET ON MARCH

  The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will soon undertake strengthening works at fire-damaged Nagtahan Bridge in Sta. Mesa, Manila. In an announcement, the DPWH National Capital Region invites interested contractors to bid for the repair/strengthening works of the 305 lineal meter Nagtahan Bridge after a July 2012 fire razed several illegal shanties under the bridge causing severe damage to the structure. According to NCR Director Reynaldo Tagudando, interested bidders can now secure copies up to March 5, 2013 of the bidding documents for the project which has an appropriation of P74.87 Million at their office located at 2nd Street, Port Area, Manila thru the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) Secretariat. Bid opening is set at 10 A.M. on that date (March 5, 2013). A pre-bid conference will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the DPWH NCR Conference Room to enable prospective contractors obtain further information about the project which is schedule to be completed within 90 calendar days. Secretary Rogelio L. Singson has immediately instructed the DPWH-NCR to conduct inspection of the bridge when the fire erupted last year, wherein it was discovered that the slabs and girder of the structure were compromised because of the blaze. The DPWH has also carried out installation of structural steel as temporary shoring as well as installation of timber blocks. To prevent further untoward incident to happen to the motorists, DPWH immediately recommended the prohibition from passing the bridge of heavy vehicles particularly trucks weighing more than 10 tons and in coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has rerouted trucks and other heavy vehicles to identified alternate routes. Motorists traveling southbound from A. Lacson to South Super Highway are advised to take a right turn to Legarda; straight to P. Casal, Ayala Boulevard; left turn to San Marcelino; left turn to P. Quirino; and right turn to South Super Highway. Motorists can also take R. Magsaysay Boulevard; right turn to Old Sta. Mesa; right turn to Sta. Mesa-Nagtahan link bridge; right turn to P. Quirino; and take next U-turn opening to South Super Highway. Northbound vehicles from South Super Highway to A. Lacson are advised to pass P. Quirino; left turn to Plaza Dilao; right turn P. Quirino Avenue Extension; left turn to UN Avenue; right turn to Romualdez; right turn to Ayala Boulevard, P. Casal, Legarda; left turn to Bustillos; right turn to H. Loyola; then left turn to A.
