President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and DPWH Secretary Victor Domingo are set to lead the inaugural ceremony of the newly completed Calaba Bridge project in Abra on Monday (May 3, 2010)
Secretary Domingo said that because of its importance and the good weather condition in the project site, the DPWH has completed the bridge project ahead of schedule.
Originally, this bridge project is scheduled to be completed by the end of May but they were able to complete the project one month ahead of schedule, Domingo said.
The Calaba Bridge project crosses Abra River connecting Bangued and the national highway going to Ilocos Norte.
Domingo also added for many years, local residents and motorists cross Abra river through a ferry boat which is more dangerous during rainy season because of the swelling of the river making it unpassable.
" The completion of this bridge ends the sufferings of the travelling public, particularly the residents of the municipalities of La Paz, Danglas and Lagayan in Abra from fording during dry season, and from being isolated every time Abra River is swollen. It also shortens the travel time by at least one hour from Bangued to Laoag City, passing through Abra- Ilocos Norte Road" Domingo added.
This P636 Million bridge project was jointly funded by the Government of the Philippines and the Austrian Government, implemented by the DPWH-Special Bridge Projects and DPWH Abra District Engineering Office
The project involves the construction of 900 lineal meters of Waagner Biro modular steel bridge, bridge approaches, slope protecion works and installation of road signs and markings. |
