DPWH TO RECONSTRUCT 56 YEAR OLD BRIDGE IN DAVAO CITY

Top

Immediately after the collapse of its pier a week ago, the Department of Public Works and Highways-Region XI Office has conducted a structural integrity assessment as it has closed to traffic the 56-year old Bankerohan bridge (Governor Generoso bridge) in Davao City. DPWH-Region XI Director Dimas Soguilon said that in compliance with the instructions of DPWH OIC-Secretary Manuel Bonoan, they are now preparing the detailed plan for the bridge reconstruction, which is a major requirement for funding allocation. Soguilon further informed that the after the construction of a new bridge, they still allowed the use of the old bridge to facilitate the flow of traffic along the heavily travelled Davao-Cotabato Road (Mc Arthur Highway), one of the main entry points to Davao City from other parts of Central and Northern Davao-Cotabato Road (Mc Arthur Highway) Gov. Generoso bridge is vital in the daily economic activities of Davao City as it serve as one of the major access road going in and out of the city and a major component of the Davao road network. “Though the Davao City local government had given us a period of eight moths to finish the bridge reconstruction, we shall target to complete the project within six moths if funds will be made available soon,” Soguilon said. Recently, DPWH Assistant Secretary Rafael Yabut, in-charge of Mindanao operations has also conducted an ocular inspection on the bridge. He further instructed the DPWH Region XI Office to determine the cause of collapse and to come up with remedial measures needed to restore the normal flow of traffic. Together with DPWH-Bureau of Design bridge experts and hydraulic engineers, the investigation revealed that the bridge collapsed due to old age because it has already served twice its expected lifespan. The deck slab sagged by 20 centimeters, but due to the bolted joints, it prevented the main bridge from collapsing. The proposed reconstruction of Gov. Generoso Bridge involves the construction of 180 lineal meters of Pre Stressed Concrete Girder bridge on bored piles, removal of 162 lineal meter Steel I-beam superstructure including piers and other existing structures and obstructions, bridge approaches and flood control structures. To date, in coordination with the local government unit the bridge was already closed to traffic, warning signs and informative signs on the alternate routes were already installed and the dismantling of deck slab is on-going to prevent further damage on the bridge.
