DPWH, DOTC AND DILG TOGETHER ON CAMPAIGN AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR ROAD SAFETY |
Top |
| |
The DPWH 7 doubles its efforts in ensuring the safety of motorists navigating its highways. More attention is being given to roads along mountainous terrain. Last year, the accident along Cebu Transcentral Highway was a big blow to the department as it claimed lives and limbs of foreign tourists who look the route to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Cebu but ended their lives in one of the ravines.
Though the main culprit was a mechanical trouble on the part of the ill-fated vehicle, the said incident triggered DPWH to take more efforts in making the roads safe for public use.
While the incident is parochial, it happens in a lot of our highways. Road accidents are worsening and its projected to be the primary cause of death of people ages 15-29 by year 2020. In 2010, United Nations General Assembly in one of its resolutions proclaimed 2011-2010 as the “Decade of Action for Road Safety” with the goal of stabilizing and then reducing traffic fatalities around the world through increased activities conducted at national, regional and global levels.
Among its strategy is to put up streamers, banners, billboards to create awareness for the public with regard to this campaign. The DOTC, who spearheads this campaign requests the support of DPWH and also of DILG to provide strategic areas long national highways, major roads/streets for the installation of needed communication materials.
Regional Directors and District Engineers were directed to support the said program. |
