The
DPWH Communication network is the foundation of the overall
DPWH technology architecture. Its objective is to improve
communication within the department both for voice and data.
Foremost among the Network’s benefits is the applications
interchange, which includes the transfer of data and other
information without going to public networks or the
Internet.
For
DPWH employees connected to the new network, communications
has never been easier. Through the use of integrated voice
and data technology, the new phone system has eliminated the
burden of the Department in paying long distance calls to
other DPWH offices for those Regions connected to the Wide
Area Network. The Central Office and all Regions connected
can call each other as if they are just making local calls.
It also improves service to the public by providing the
ability for direct inward dialing versus the use of
telephone operators to relay the calls. Not only that, a lot
of time previously wasted in placing and waiting for return
calls if a person is out has been eliminated through the use
of emails.
With
the institution of the DPWH data communication links,
memorandums and other pertinent documents can now be
submitted in just a few minutes, eliminating the need for
time consuming and expensive courier services between the
offices. Documents can now be easily attached to internal
electronic mail or large files can be shared across the
network. In Central Office alone there are roughly 800
computers connected to networking while there are 25 to 40
computers in each region.
